Since 1990, Martin Youth Foundation has delivered on Sir David Martin’s vision of offering hope, safety and opportunity to young people in crisis. Our work has been guided by the unwavering stewardship of Sir David’s wife, Lady Martin, and children, Will, Anna and Sandy.
Sir David Martin, the people’s Governor
Rear Admiral Sir David James Martin, KCMG, AO (15 April 1933–10 August 1990) was a senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy and later Governor of New South Wales (20 January 1989–7 August 1990). He was educated at the Scots College, Sydney and joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1947. He graduated in 1950 before marrying Suzanne Millear in 1957. After a long and distinguished naval career, he retired in February 1988 with the rank of Rear Admiral.
Standing up for vulnerable young Australians
During his time as Governor, Sir David became known as the ‘the people’s Governor’ for his tireless efforts to build relationships between his office and the people of New South Wales. He was a staunch advocate for young people experiencing drugs, alcohol, homelessness and abuse and believed deeply that with the right support, they could rewrite the stories of their lives.
Just three days before his death, as he resigned from his role due to an advancing medical condition, Sir David began making plans for a foundation to help disadvantaged young Australians.

Meet the Martin family
Lady Martin (Susie) OAM
If Sir David Martin was the soul of the Foundation, Lady Martin became its heart. She was the driving force behind the establishment of the Martin Youth Foundation (then Sir David Martin Foundation) in 1990. For more than 30 years, she worked tirelessly to empower young people to rewrite their stories.

From 1990–2024, Lady Martin was a guiding light for the Foundation’s activities. She identified organisational priorities, shaped critical decisions and supported countless fundraising events. She was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday 2011 Honours and Lifetime Membership of Mission Australia for her commitment to helping young people in crisis.
Captain William Martin RAN (Rtd)
Captain William Martin, Sir David and Lady Martin’s son, followed his father into the Royal Australian Navy. He has since built a career as a professional speaker, certified organisational and team coach, and the Director of Waterline Leadership. Will joined the Martin Youth Foundation Board in 2015 and was appointed as its Chair in 2021. He remains a steward of both the Foundation and of his father’s remarkable vision, driven by a sense of responsibility, loyalty and family legacy.

Anna Beaumont
The daughter of Sir David and Lady Martin, Anna was integral to the Foundation’s operations as a Fundraising Coordinator and Philanthropy Manager between 2011–2023. She personified her father’s values through her deep connections with donors, staff, and the young beneficiaries of our programs. In 2023, she retired from her role and transitioned to the Martin Youth Foundation Board. Her deep experience, empathy and belief in Sir David’s mission remain integral to the Foundation’s work today.

Sandy Di Pietro
Sandy, Sir David and Lady Martin’s first daughter, has witnessed the growth of the Martin Youth Foundation since its inception more than three decades ago. Alongside her husband, Vince Di Pietro, Sandy has played an important role in representing the Martin family, strengthening Navy community connections, building relationships with supporters and representing the family at Foundation events.
