Yes, I want to help.

With the right support, Jarrod turned his life around

Jarrod was in Year 8 the first time he took drugs. A classmate told him: “They’re from a doctor”, so he thought they’d help him cope with the anxiety he had as a young teen navigating school and life.

It was the beginning of a journey with substance misuse that lasted for over seven years. That time included multiple overdoses, drug-induced psychosis, depression and periods of homelessness. “I realised I needed to do something about it, but it was so hard,” he says.

The turning point came when he was incarcerated. “When my dad and mum visited me in jail, that was a big wake-up call,” says Jarrod.

Thanks to caring people like you, Jarrod had access to youth-specific recovery programs that helped him break the cycle of addiction and begin again.

The second time, he was ready

While Jarrod tried hard, he wasn’t able to complete his first attempt at rehabilitation at Triple Care Farm, but months later he made the courageous decision to re-enter the program a second time.

This time he was ready.

“The difference was I actually wanted to be there because I was so done,” he says. “It was scary but it felt like a new beginning.”

“During the 12-week program at Triple Care Farm, I began to believe that there was a better life than the one I had been living. The staff never gave up on me, they supported me and encouraged me to become a better version of myself,” he says.

Five months after graduating from rehabilitation, Jarrod has reconnected with his love of fitness and is studying at TAFE to become a social worker. When he needs it, he has the ongoing support of an aftercare worker.

When asked what he’s most proud of, Jarrod’s answer is simple, yet powerful: “Turning my life around.”
